Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to be screened?
The Archdiocese of Toronto requires that each parish screen its volunteers
according to the "Strengthening the Caring Community" screening program. Every
parish must comply.
My child would like to become an Altar Server. Does he also have to be
screened?
Altar servers are not screened as such, but are simply registered. In other
words, they fill out the Volunteer Information Form
for minors. No interview or criminal record check is done for a general risk
ministry such as this one.
I have had a criminal record check done for another volunteer organization.
Can I use the same one for my ministry work here at the Parish?
The Archdiocese requires that we maintain an original copy of the police check
in our files. Each criminal record check that is carried out for an individual
lists the organization that requested the report. Therefore, a criminal record
check requested by another organization would not be valid for our purposes.
How often do I have to be screened?
A full screening with interview, police check and reference checks is only done
once. However, as of October 2009, the Archdiocese requires that volunteers
renew their police check every five (5) years.
I was screened as a minor for a high risk position and am now 18. Do I have
to be re-screened as an adult?
You do not have to be rescreened; however, you will be required to have a police
check done now that you are 18 years of age.
I filled out a Volunteer Information Form when I became a Eucharistic
Minister. Do I have to fill out another one to become a Lector?
You do not need to fill out another Volunteer Information Form if you are
volunteering for another general risk level ministry. However, we do ask that
you contact the volunteer ministries co-ordinator to let them know you are now
participating in a new ministry. If you want
to volunteer for a high risk level position such as Companion Server, then you
must follow the screening measures for that position, which include having an
interview, a criminal reference check and reference checks.
My friend belongs to another parish and has not been screened? Why do I have
to do it when my friend does not?
Your friend must also be screened. However, because every parish in the
Archdiocese is at a different stage in their screening process it is possible
that at your friend's parish they have not reached the same level in their
screening process.
I am a new parishioner and would like to volunteer but don't know where to go
for information. Where do I start?
This web site is an excellent place to start. Click on any of the links under
Volunteer Opportunities for information. Also, the parish handbook, which is
found at the back of the church, lists and describes all the ministries in the
parish and provides contact names. If all else fails, you can contact a member
of the Volunteer Ministries Team and we can direct you to a ministry that you
might interest you.
