The loonies and toonies you place in the poor box on Sunday are put to work in our community. This means food vouchers for our clients – mostly single moms with children.

Our focus is on emergency assistance to people who may suddenly find themselves in need.

Our home visits provide assistance by way of food vouchers, clothing, and furniture, friendship and guidance.

Our work is done with humility and respect for human dignity, while truly bearing witness to the love that God has for all people, especially those most in need.

Council General International has endowed The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul with an international logo. Four hearts, the symbol of love and courage are intertwined in a sign of solidarity, and placed in a cross showing our faith and our attachment to Christianity. The point of each heart is directed towards the four corners of the globe symbolizing the presence of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul throughout the world. The Fish is the symbol of Christianity and in this case represents the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The eye of the Fish is the vigilant eye of God seeking to help the poor and underprivileged in our midst. The crossing at the tail or a tie-knot represents unity and oneness among members and also in union with the poor. The loop signifies the global or worldwide stature of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, an international Society.

Membership in the Society at St. Elizabeth’s and St. John’s involves:

  • Regular, confidential meetings once a month on the second Monday at 7 PM to discuss action plans for assisting the needy

  • Regular Tuesday night sessions at St. John’s to distribute food vouchers

  • Visiting the needy families in their homes as calls for assistance are received

  • Christmas Basket Program (collecting/sorting and delivery to over 150 families)

  • Holding Poor Boxes at Masses to receive funds on behalf of those in need

  • Friendship, guidance and referrals to enable families to improve their situations through community programmes and parish involvement.

St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) was founder of the Congregation of the Mission, Daughters of Charity, Confraternities of Charity, and Ladies of Charity. A man of deep faith, keen intellect, and enormous creativity, he has become known as the "The Apostle of Charity" and "Father of the Poor." His contributions to the training of priests and organizing parish missions and other services for the poor shaped our Church's role in the modern world.
