exultation as one feast day, indeed as one "great Sunday." These are
the days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung.
The Sundays of this time of year are
considered to be Sundays of Easter and are called, after Easter
Sunday itself, the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Sundays
of Easter. This sacred period of fifty days concludes with Pentecost
Sunday. |

Family Activities to Celebrate the Easter Season

is the most important feast of the Christian year—so important
that the Church sets aside a seven-week season to rejoice in
Christ’s victory over sin and death. How can a family sustain
this “Easter spirit” of celebration all the way to Pentecost?
Here are fifty ways to celebrate the fifty days. But don’t try
to do them all! Each week, just pick a few ideas that seem right
for you. You’ll be rejoicing long after the last jelly bean is
gone!" |

Easter time
First, we kept the forty days, with praying, fasting and giving alms. Then
we celebrated the three days of Christ’s passion, dying and rising. Now we
delight in the fifty days, with rejoicing, feasting and giving witness! The
season of Easter is fifty days long. It is a time of joy and rejoicing. The
church tells us, “the fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated
in joyful exultation as one feast day. These above all others are days for the
singing of the Alleluia.
Why is Easter time fifty days?
The ancient cultures that gave us the Bible had great respect for numbers. They
believed that numbers contained hints about God and the meaning of life. The
number seven was thought to contain fullness: There are seven days in the week,
according to God’s original way of ordering time, creating all that there is and
resting. So if you multiply 7 times 7, you have “fullness times fullness.”
But wait! 7 X 7 is 49! With God,
there is always more—more than we can ever imagine. So our holy season of Easter
is even more than “fullness times fullness.” It’s fullness times fullness” and
then some. That’s what love is like: more than we can ever imagine. That’s what
heaven is going to be like: more than we can ever imagine.
The fifty days are days for
looking for the risen Lord among us, for hearing each other’s stories of rising
from the big and small deaths, days when we experience something of Christ’s
triumphs. Death is not the last word! Life and love are forever! And slowly, we
work together, together with Christ, to change this world into the world to
come. Sing Alleluia! |

Easter Eggs
The egg has been the most identifiable Easter symbol for centuries; it’s the
symbol of fertility and new life. Just as the chick breaks the bondage of its
shell and emerges into new life, so too did our Saviour when he broke the
fetters of death and emerged from the rock tomb to give us everlasting life.
In many Old World countries fasting involved giving up dairy products as well as
meat. On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday the house was cleansed of all eggs,
milk and cheese. This led to the custom of Pancake Tuesday.
Lent was springtime in these countries. Thus, the eggs were not eaten so that
new chicks could be born. Milk (and therefore, cheese) was not available because
it was needed for the calves and kid-goats. Animals could not be slaughtered for
meat because they were needed to feed and care for their young.
This led to the custom of joyfully decorating, hunting and eating eggs on Easter
Sunday. Although eggs represent new life, the symbolism for Christians goes
deeper – it represents the emergence of Christ from his tomb into everlasting
life. That’s why at Easter, they are decorated with symbols of Easter, Alleluia,
and blessed along with other festive foods.

Pentecost Sunday
On the feast of the Ascension we commemorate
Jesus’ returning to heaven to be with his
Father. We are left to continue his mission of
building the Reign of God on earth. We cannot do
this alone so on Pentecost we celebrate the fact
that Jesus sends his spirit to empower us to
carry on his work. Next weekend is Pentecost
Sunday and to help us celebrate the Feast of
Pentecost let us all try to wear the colour red.

Surf and Turf Feast
St. John Chrysostom Parish is once again
presenting a Surf and Turf Feast on Saturday,
June 8.
Cocktails will be served at 6:00 pm followed by
dinner (lobster or steak) at 7 pm. There will be
door prizes and entertainment by Irish dancers.
Tickets are $35 per person and a limited number
will go on sale this weekend after each mass.

Backpack Program
Each year, the York Region Food Network
coordinates a Backpack Program that provides
basic school supplies through the food banks
directly to children in low income families.
The CWL is supporting this important program by
collecting items for these backpacks. You can
drop off items at any time in the Stained Glass
Room. We require new items only such as
backpacks, binders, paper, pencils, coloured
pencils, erasers, pens, and pencil cases.
Younger children need crayons and high school
students need scientific calculators and math
sets.

New Parishioners Welcome
The next Welcome Sunday for new parishioners
will be June 2 after the 10 am mass.
Refreshments will be served after mass in the
Gathering Room. New parishioners can register
through our website, by calling the parish
office or filling out a registration form
located at the back of the church. Please see
one of the priests after mass in the next couple
of weeks to have your picture taken so that we
can display it on the overhead that weekend.

Catholic Women’s League News
General Meeting
The next General meeting will be Tuesday, May 21
at 7:30 pm in the Parish Hall. The guest speaker
will be June Andrews who will be introducing us
to the Rosary Ministry. Our meetings are open to
anyone who would like to check us out.

Confirmation
A reminder to all our confirmandii that the
final meetings of confirmation reflection will
be held the weeks of May 21 & 27. Check your
calendar to find out when your group is meeting
or call the parish office.

Cemetery Clean Up Thank You
Thank you to everyone who came out for the
spring clean up of the cemetery last Saturday. A
record number of volunteers showed up to help
make the cemetery look wonderful. Your help was
greatly appreciated.

Healing Mass Thank You
The steering committee of St. John
Chrysostom’s Visiting Ministry would like to
report that the Healing mass that took place on
Monday, May 13 was an outstanding success. The
nursing homes in our area participated as did
shut-ins and sick in our parish plus many of our
own parishioners. The service was beautiful. Fr.
Miro spoke about confidence and trust in God.
All were anointed. The music with David and
Pierrette was wonderful and really appreciated.
Special thanks to all who helped make this
possible: the ladies of the CWL for their
delicious luncheon; the Knights of Columbus for
assisting with transportation as well as
volunteers from Improving Lives In-Home Care;
Leo and his helper Darren who worked so hard
setting up tables and chairs. In all we had
approximately 110 attendees including
parishioners who assisted with the luncheon. A
heartfelt thank you to everyone!

Community Bread Anniversary Mass
Community Bread is celebrating its 10th
anniversary this year. A new dated has been set
to commemorate the event. All past and present
volunteers are invited to mass on Saturday, June
22 at 5 pm. A Wine and Cheese reception will
follow in the Gathering Room after mass.

Knights of Columbus
There will be a Knights of Columbus meeting
this Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 pm in the Bishop
Clune Room of the Parish Centre. Our apologies
for the confusion caused by the incorrect date
given in last week’s bulletin. All members are
encouraged to attend.

Food for Change - From Charity to Dignity
Dignified access to food for all is a value
articulated in the York Region Food Charter. You
are invited to an informative conversation about
the relationship between food charity and food
security in York Region on Wednesday, May 29
from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Buttonville Women’s
Institute, 8931 Woodbine Ave, Markham. Light
refreshments will be served.
Guest speakers are Valerie Tarasuk, Professor,
University of Toronto and Yvonne Kelly,
Volunteer Co-Facilitator, Freedom 90.

Catholic parents of lesbian daughters and
gay sons are invited to a day of reflection on

Living the Spirit
A post-confirmation retreat will be held on
Saturday, May 25 from 1 pm to 6 pm at
St. Bonaventure Parish, 1300 Leslie St.,
Toronto. If you've been confirmed in the past
year and are wondering where the Holy Spirit
might be leading you, this is the perfect
opportunity to explore how God continues to
guide us through our faith and the Church. The
event will be led by Friar Eric de la Peña and
begins with a welcome BBQ and ends with the
celebration of our Sunday Vigil Mass. This

As numerous municipalities throughout the Archdiocese of
Toronto consider the development of a large scale casino,
Cardinal Collins has prepared a pastoral letter to the catholic
community on gaming, gambling & casinos. Copies are available at
